In English, we teach English writing and Active Read, alongside discrete weekly grammar lessons and daily spelling lessons. We use interesting fiction and non-fiction books with ambitious vocabulary as stimuli for lessons, encouraging the children to really engage with the texts to achieve their best.
In maths, we start with practical maths, using apparatus, and move onto drawing and using pictures to represent numbers and then the more abstract calculations once the concepts are secure.
The foundation subjects are also taught on a two-year cycle, split into discrete lessons for History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology, Music, PE, Computing and PSHE, covering both knowledge and skills in all those subjects.
“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.” Acts 2:4
The National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages begins in KS2, however we have designed our curriculum to be ambitious and to ensure that our children begin to develop an understanding of Spain, and basic phrases in KS1.
The phrases that the children will be learning to speak and will hear are:
Buenos Dias – Good Morning
Buenas Tardes – Good Afternoon
Hola – Hello
Adios – Good Bye
We endeavour to ensure that the children have lots of hands-on learning experiences with regular trips to museums, places of worship and attractions, as well as in-school workshops, all of which link closely to the National Curriculum objectives being taught.
The children in KS1 take part in weekly Religious Education lessons. Our curriculum is comprised of 60% Christianity and 40% World Faiths. During their time at Prestbury, the children will have encountered Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Humanism.
We follow the Questful R.E syllabus where the children begin with an enquiry question. For example, ‘Why do we give and receive gifts?’ The children then embark on a journey of answering this question through learning about what a Christian would believe, what someone of another faith might believe and finally, what they believe for themselves.
R.E lessons allow the children to be creative, to think deeply, to appreciate the different beliefs of others, to develop their listening and understanding, and to grow as individuals into all God made them to be.
We can provide paper copies of any information free of charge upon request.
